Content descriptions

General Note:
'In celebration of Nunavut' is a collection of films made between 1942 and 1996, on life in the Arctic from first contact to today. While some of these archival films reflect the colonialist attitudes of their era, they remain important historical documents.
Formatted Contents Note:
v. 1. People of the seal, pt. 1: Eskimo summer (1971-ca. 52 min.)
Summary, etc.:
Summer with one of the Netsilik families of the Pelly Bay region. Today they live in settlements, but when this film was shot, the Netsilik hunted and travelled much as they had for centuries. In this 1971 video, we accompany one family on their journey inland from the ice, where they spent their winter. Then we join them as they build a new kayak, lay in a supply of fish, and hunt caribou. Mostly in Inukititut.
